Back to the Mothership, ALASKA

POSTED BY IN Sierra Anderson, Sitka Herring @ March 12, 2010 - 7:04 am

From the Colorado ski slopes to the Alaska fishing grounds,  it’s time for yet another fishing adventure, this time its Herring season. My dad is a commercial fisherman and inevitably I grew up in the world of fishing, spending many of my summers in Alaska.

I am on the plane, headed North to Seattle then Ketchikan and finally to Sitka. I take my seat, and begin the people watching sesh. You can meet some of the most interesting characters on flights like these.

The further North I go, I am always intrigued by the more obvious changes observed in the people around me.

Alaskans are really friendly, personal, and down to earth people. In my experience and for these reasons, I think Alaska Airlines has the best flight attendants in the field. I look around and see more people wearing hoodies, camo jackets, the classic fisherman’s footwear, ‘Xtra Tuf’, and of course the men outnumber the women ten to one.

They say “Alaska is where the men are men and so are the women”. I don’t know if I would go that far, but it is a place I call home.

As I near my final destination, it’s always a gamble whether or not these planes are going to land in the right place; meaning, heavy weather patterns tend to steer these wings off course. This is why my mother and sister are stuck in Anchorage right now, and my dad is somewhere at sea with the boat headed this way. I know Alaska Airlines has the most skilled pilots in the field so I wasn’t too worried. After a rather rough landing, I step off the plane and am revived. The air here is so crisp and clean, I feel rejuvenated in one breath. It’s a place of raw new discoveries every-time.  I am anxious to see what is in store for this new adventure, but for now its time to catch up on sleep.
