“An eye in every window” is a phrase my dad uses to describe a net that is full of salmon. The window is a term for the mesh and when there is an eye in each one, that means almost every mesh appears to have a salmon head coming out of it.
This video is definitely Of Epic Proportion and Real Alaska approved. Even though the quality is not the greatest, you can see what a full set can look like in Bristol Bay. Oftentimes, when it will take too long to pick each fish in succession, a boat will round haul the entire net. Once the net is aboard, the crew will spend hours picking each fish out as they put the net, very, very slowly back on the reel.
Round hauling means a lot of work for the crew. I’m talking hands so sore it may be difficult for a man to go to the bathroom. I’ll let you use your imagination on that one.
