Brett Veerhusen being a young skipper

Do you know how many times I hear, “I’m getting too old for this shit”?

Well, I’m sorry to break the news, but if you think you might be, then you probably are…

A season filled with highs and lows, battles and victories. Here is a glimpse of my never to be forgotten experience crewing aboard the F/V Memry Anne during the Sitka Sac Roe Herring Fishery of 2011. Enjoy!

Indulge in photos from this year’s 2011 Sitka Sac Roe Herring Season. I captured most of these photos but some are contributed by my sister Memry. Brett and I want to give a huge thanks to her support. This album show the beauty of Sitka, Alaska and the essence of this fishery.

Boat Carnage

From the corner of my eye I spot a white mass come out of no where. Before I know it I am knocked against the cabin and here a deafening CRASH! Another boat collides with our starboard stern quarter and a true Sitka herring opener underway.

Midnight Set in the Nushagak

I can feel it. Can you? Maybe it is the fact that my bank account is significantly smaller than last September and I know that it is time to refuel. I understand that it is only the middle of March, but in two and a half quick months I’ll be making the GREAT MIGRATION to [...]

Fishing is not always a money maker. The risks we take are very real. Last Spring, Sierra witnessed this first hand when her boat was struck by another and then nearly capsized as an enormous school of herring died and almost took the F/V Shady Lady down with them. My unfortunate luck had nothing to [...]

On the fishing grounds, we are lucky enough to see wildlife that most people don’t see throughout their lifetimes. In this video, enjoy nature at her finest. Keep an eye for porpoise, whales, bears, sea lions and lots and lots of salmon of course! Discovery Channel, you’ve got nothing on this! Special thanks to fisherman [...]

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers from everyone  here at The Real Alaska. As a special holiday treat I’ve included an informative and quick video about fishing “The Line” in Bristol Bay. I’ll let you decide and form you own opinions about the line, but essentially every fishing district in Bristol Bay has boundary [...]

The Fisherman’s Dictionary
POSTED BY Brett Veerhusen IN Advice, Occupation, Video
Line, not rope, string or anything else

Fishermen are not only known for using terms that the Discovery Channel needs to bleep out. Sure, one can add F*$@ to almost anything and feel a bit more salty, and perhaps S#%! can be substituted for a noun, adjective or verb. But the most important words and phrases to know come from the fisherman’s [...]
